Mother Tree

Mother Tree - colourful image of a tree

Mother Tree

This painting started life as a red landscape, criss crossed by lines and coloured small shapes. For some reason it just didn’t work for me, so I began to white out areas that I found least appealing. Gradually the shape of my new marks started to resemble the branches of a tree, so I allowed a tree to emerge.

For me this imagined tree is a beacon of an ancient and important living being. It stands strongly rooted in its landscape, lines in all directions link it to the community of living things beyond. Hidden roots take nourishment from the ecosystem it shares below ground, so as to create a vibrant and wide reaching ecosystem above. Leaves, bark, sap, fruit and shelter are all on offer.

Mother Tree stands guard and enables life.
